Why Does My Sump Pump Keep Running and How to Stop It

Your sump pump keeps running without stopping because the internal mechanical float switch has become physically stuck against the basin wall, the check valve has failed and is allowing water to flow backward into the pit, or the discharge pipe is completely blocked or frozen. Even if there is no active flooding, a jammed float switch or a faulty valve forces the motor to run continuously to empty a pit that cannot drain. Unplugging the pump, clearing debris from the float track, and inspecting the check valve will stop the continuous running immediately.

It is an incredibly stressful experience to walk down into your basement and hear the loud, continuous hum of your sump pump motor running non-stop for hours on end. When you know the rain has stopped and the ground is dry, a pump that refuses to shut off is a major warning sign. Your immediate panic might make you worry that your basement is on the verge of a massive flood, or that the pump’s motor will completely burn out overnight, stuck with a massive repair bill.
Fortunately, a continuously running sump pump is a very common plumbing issue that rarely requires buying a whole new system. Most of the time, the problem is caused by a simple mechanical blockage or a cheap internal valve that you can easily troubleshoot yourself in under an hour.
Here is a practical, step-by-step guide to finding the exact cause of your running sump pump and shutting it down safely.
1. Free a stuck or jammed float switch
The absolute number one cause for a sump pump that will not turn off is a physically jammed float switch. The float switch works exactly like the mechanism inside a toilet tank: as water fills the pit, a plastic float rises up, eventually flipping a switch to turn the pump motor on. As the water empties, the float drops back down to cut the power.
Over time, the forceful vibrations of the motor can cause the entire sump pump unit to slowly slide sideways inside the plastic basin. This movement wedges the plastic float directly against the rough walls of the pit, trapping it in the "up" position. Unplug the pump from the wall for safety, look down into the pit, and gently nudge the pump back into the center of the basin. Flick the float rod with your finger to make sure it slides up and down smoothly without catching on the walls or any loose electrical cords.
2. Replace a failed or cracked check valve
If your float switch moves up and down perfectly but the pump still runs in a short, non-stop loop, your check valve has likely failed. The check valve is a small plastic or brass joint installed on your vertical discharge pipe. Its only job is to allow water to pump out of your basement while physically blocking that same water from draining backward into the pit once the motor shuts off.
When the internal rubber flap inside the check valve wears out or cracks, the gallons of water sitting in the vertical pipe slip right back down into the basin the second the pump stops. This instantly refills the pit, triggers the float switch, and forces the pump to turn right back on. Watch the water level inside your pit closely. If you see water actively rushing backward out of the pipe joints after the pump tries to shut down, you need to unscrew the old check valve and twist on a cheap replacement from the hardware store.
3. Clear debris and mud from the bottom of the basin
Think about how much dirt, sand, and small gravel chunks wash into your basement sump pit from underneath your foundation walls over years of heavy rain. Over time, this thick mud and gritty debris collects on the floor of the basin, forming a heavy sludge layer around the base of your pump.
If this debris wraps around the intake screen at the bottom of the pump, it chokes off the water flow. The motor will spin at full speed, but it cannot pull enough water through the clogged screen to lower the basin level and trip the shut-off switch. Unplug the pump, lift it slightly out of the basin, and scrape away any thick mud, leaves, or stones trapped around the bottom mesh screen. Clearing this physical bottleneck allows the pump to drain the pit rapidly and shut off normally.
4. Check for a blocked or frozen discharge pipe
If your sump pump motor is running loudly but the water level inside the plastic pit is not dropping at all, the water has nowhere to go. This happens when the exterior discharge pipe the pipe that carries the water safely away from your home's foundation becomes completely blocked by yard debris, autumn leaves, or a rodent nest.
During colder winter months, this exterior line can also easily freeze solid if the pipe does not slope downward properly to drain completely. When the line is blocked or frozen, the pump will continuously churn the exact same pool of water inside the pit until the motor overheats. Walk outside your home, trace the discharge pipe to where it empties into your yard, and make sure the opening is completely clear of ice, packed dirt, or grass clippings.
5. Separate a failed dual-cord switch system
Many modern heavy-duty sump pumps utilize what is known as a dual-cord system to connect to your wall outlet. One power cord runs straight from the pump motor, and it plugs into the back of a second plug attached to the float switch. This is called a piggyback plug.
Over years of continuous electrical current, the internal contact switches inside that piggyback plug can physically melt together, locking the power in a permanent "ON" state regardless of where the float is sitting. To test if this is your issue, unplug the main cord from the wall, pull the pump motor plug out of the back of the float switch plug, and plug the motor cord directly into the wall socket on its own. If the pump runs instantly, your switch plug is defective and needs to be replaced, allowing you to save the expensive main pump motor.
